چکیده

Mechanical properties of cellular materials depend on their relative densities. In this paper, variability in elastic modulus, plastic strength, and energy absorption of a closed-cell Al foam, ALPORAS, and their connection with the variability in the density was examined. It was found that the tangent modulus in initial loading is considerably lower and has higher variability visa-vis the unloading modulus, a result of the higher sensitivity of the former to morphological defects in the cellular structure. The variability in the plastic strength and energy absorption are found to be similar, because of their interdependence. Within the range of the specimen volumes examined, no size-scaling of properties was observed. The variance in modulus and plastic strength are correlated with that in the density with the aid of the scaling relationships and error propagation techniques. Furthermore, the variability in plastic strength is related to the variance in the cell-size by considering the micromechanism of deformation in closed-cell foams, which is the collective collapse of 5–6 cells. Implications of these results in the context of manufacturing and testing strategies are discussed. 2003 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Improving the Performance of the Sandwich Panel with the Corrugated Core Filled with Metal Foam: Mathematical and Numerical Methods

A new type of composite structure with a metal foam is reinforced by the metal corrugated core, called metal-foam-filled sandwich panel with a corrugated or V-frame core, is modelled, simulated, and studied in this article. All types of samples with different relative densities of the foam are tested and analyzed under the drop hammer load. The sandwich panel included two aluminium face-sheet, ...

Influence of Different Foaming Conditions on the Mechanical, Physical, and Structural Properties of Polypropylene Foam

In this article, the effects of different foam production times and temperatures on the mechanical, physical, and structural properties of polypropylene (PP) foam has been investigated. The microcellular PP foams were carried out using supercritical carbon dioxide (sc-CO2) as a physical foaming agent in a batch process. The samples were placed in a pressure vessel and were saturated ...

EFFECT OF CERAMIC FOAM FILTERS ON OXIDES REMOVAL AND THE TENSILE PROPERTIES OF A-356 ALLOY CASTINGS

This article examines the Weibull statistical analysis that was used for investigating the effect of melt filtration on tensile properties and defects formed inside the casting. Forming and entrapping of double oxide films have been explained by using the context of critical velocity of melt in the runner. SutCast software results were used to examine the amounts of the velocity of melt as...

Evaluation of Simultaneous Effect of Melt Filtration and Cooling Rate on Tensile Properties of A356 Cast Alloy

The combined influence of both melt filtration and cooling rate on the microstructure features and mechanical properties of A356 cast alloy was studied. A step casting model with five different thicknesses was used to obtain different cooling rates. The effect of melt filtration was studied by using of 10 and 20 ppi ceramic foam filters in the runner. Results showed that secondary dendrite arm ...
